If you're a learner driver in NSW, you can record your supervised driving hours in the paper log book or in a log book app. Since 2024, Transport for NSW has accepted only one app, Roundtrip. If you logged hours in L2P or Licence Ready, here's what you need to know and how to make sure those hours still count.
Which log book app is accepted in NSW?
Roundtrip is the only official learner log book app accepted by Transport for NSW. It's available for iPhone and Android. If you're starting your learner licence now, you can choose Roundtrip or the paper log book.
What happened to L2P and Licence Ready?
- L2P stopped being accepted as a log book on 29 February 2024.
- Licence Ready stopped being accepted on 29 June 2024.
Hours logged in these apps aren't lost, but they need to be transferred into a paper log book before you can use them.
How to transfer your hours
- Go to a Service NSW centre with your learner licence and the paper log book you were issued. If you no longer have it, ask the centre for a replacement.
- Staff use your licence number to retrieve the hours you logged in the app.
- They verify your hours and record the total in your paper log book as a single entry.
- You then keep logging your remaining hours in the paper log book.
Your hours can only be retrieved if your licence number was entered correctly in the app. If you're booking your driving test using hours from Licence Ready, arrive at the centre at least one hour early so there's time to transfer them.
What you need to log
If you're under 25, you need at least 120 hours of supervised driving, including at least 20 hours at night, and you must hold your learner licence for at least 10 months before you can sit the Hazard Perception Test.
If you're under 25, each hour with a licensed NSW driving instructor counts as 3 hours in your log book, for up to 10 hours of lessons. That's up to 20 bonus hours.
Completing the Safer Drivers Course adds another 20 bonus hours for eligible learners under 25.
Tips for keeping your log book accurate
- Record every drive straight after you finish, rather than catching up later.
- Make sure your supervisor checks and signs off each entry.
- Keep track of your night hours separately so you know when you've reached 20.
- Ask your instructor to record your lessons, so the bonus hours are counted correctly.
