This service is suitable for drivers completing a licence-related assessment, those referred by a GP or medical specialist, drivers seeking greater confidence, and families or carers looking for reassurance about a loved one’s driving ability.

FYI – older driver licensing in NSW

There is no upper age limit for renewing a driver licence in NSW. Instead, additional medical and driving requirements apply as drivers get older.

  • From age 75: Drivers with an unrestricted Class C licence are required to complete a medical assessment for Fitness to Drive each year and an annual eyesight test.
  • From age 85: Drivers who wish to keep their unrestricted Class C licence must also complete an on-road driving assessment every two years.
  • A driving assessment may also be required at an earlier age if recommended by a GP or medical specialist.
  • The on-road assessment can be completed at a Service NSW centre or with a Transport for NSW-accredited Older Driver Assessor.

Before your assessment

To help your assessment run smoothly:

  • Bring your current NSW driver licence.
  • Wear any glasses or corrective lenses you normally use when driving.
  • Let us know about any relevant medical or driving concerns before your appointment.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the test at Service NSW instead?
Yes. You can complete the aged driving test at a Service NSW centre free of charge. There is a limit of three attempts if you need to re-sit the test. Alternatively, you can complete the assessment with a Transport for NSW-accredited Older Driver Assessor for a fee.
Is this assessment mandatory?
This depends on your age, licence and individual circumstances. Drivers aged 85 and over who wish to keep an unrestricted Class C licence are generally required to complete an on-road assessment every two years. An assessment may also be required if recommended by your doctor or medical specialist.
Will I lose my licence after this assessment?
Not necessarily. The assessment is used to evaluate your ability to drive safely. Your assessor will explain the outcome and any recommended next steps following the assessment. Licence decisions are ultimately subject to Transport for NSW requirements.
Do I need a doctor referral?
Not always. Some drivers are asked to complete an assessment following a medical assessment, while drivers aged 85 and over may need an assessment as part of the requirements for keeping an unrestricted Class C licence. If you are unsure, please enquire and our team can help explain the next steps.
How long does the assessment take?
The on-road component generally takes around 15–20 minutes. Additional time is allowed for the pre-drive discussion, vehicle checks and feedback. If you choose an option that includes a refresher lesson, your overall appointment will be longer.
Can the assessment be done from my home?
Yes. An Older Driver Assessment with an accredited Older Driver Assessor can be conducted from your home or local area, making the process more convenient and familiar.
Can I use my own vehicle?
Yes. We can provide an automatic instructor vehicle for the assessment at no additional cost. You may also use your own suitable vehicle. The vehicle must be registered, roadworthy and ready to drive. If you require a manual assessment, you will need to provide your own suitable manual vehicle.
What happens if I’m not ready?
If additional preparation would be helpful, we can arrange refresher driving lessons focused on the areas where you need more practice or confidence before another assessment.
Is passing guaranteed?
No. The assessment outcome is based on your on-road driving performance and ability to drive safely. We can, however, provide clear feedback and optional refresher training to help you prepare.
